If you have a question that is not listed below, please contact us directly using our Contact page. One of our instructors will contact you to answer any questions you might have.
WHAT IS JUDO AND IS IT SAFE?
Judo, also known as "The Gentle Way", is an Olympic sport, Japanese defensive martial art, and international form of physical fitness. It uses the principles of balance, physics, and technique to overcome the size and strength of an opponent or attacker. It does not include offensive techniques such as punching or kicking but instead focuses on throwing, pinning, or forcing your opponent to submit to your control. Judo is the 2nd most practiced sport in the world, 2nd only to soccer. It is a lifelong sport and has practitioners (judoka) from age 5 to 100. Just like any other type of contact sport, judo does include some risk of personal injury. Following the instructions of the instructor (sensei), knowing your own personal limitations, and ensuring you only reserve the techniques learned in judo for the right time and place (practice, competition, self-defense) will greatly reduce the risk of injury. View this short video which highlights the essence of judo.
WHAT AGES DO YOU INSTRUCT?
The minimum age for participation and membership is age 5, however, we encourage parents to start their kids around age 6 or 7 (but not required). We instruct both children and adults of all ages.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BECOME A MEMBER?
All new participants are required to enroll as a member of the United States Judo Federation. This 1, 4, 8, or 12-month membership must remain active at all times in order to participate in any type of judo related activity (including practice and training sessions). With your USJF membership, the USJF will provide the new member's beneficiaries with limited accidental medical coverage, as well as track, record, and monitor participant progress, rank, and promotions. New members may register using the primary individual USJF membership online checkout process. If you are unable to complete this enrollment online directly through the USJF's website, cash or check payments for membership may be paid directly to Treasure Valley Judo, Ltd. prior to your first training session. Please print, complete, and sign this USJF membership form, and bring it with you with the associated cash/check payment. In addition to your USJF membership, new members and their parents must complete the Treasure Valley Judo, Ltd. IS COMPETITION REQUIRED?
No. Members are not required to participate in local, regional, or national judo competition if they prefer not to. That said, all participants are encouraged to support, assist, and be available for their teammates competing in upcoming tournaments.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS AND CLUB REGISTERED TO TEACH JUDO?
Absolutely. Treasure Valley Judo, Ltd. is an active registered member of the United States Judo Federation, a national governing body of judo in the United States. All of our instructors have received their black belt promotions from a national governing body of judo and completed all required background checks, coaching certifications, teacher certifications, and CPR/First Aid training. All instructors are active individual members of the United States Judo Federation, or USA Judo, Inc.
IS A JUDO GI (UNIFORM), OR OTHER DRESS/HYGIENE REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE?
Yes. New or gently used judo gi's may be purchased directly from Treasure Valley Judo, Ltd. or purchased from a third party seller. Please be aware that karate style uniforms will not work for judo, as they are not durable enough for the techniques participants will be learning. Judo gi's should be sized according to current IJF (International Judo Federation) regulations. Please meet with an instructor to size your judo gi correctly. In the event your gi size is out of stock, an order will be placed with our supplier. In the interim, students may participate in training sessions by wearing full length sweats with an undershirt. Students are encouraged to wear slippers or "flip flops," as students are barefoot on the mat. Long haired students should wear their hair pulled back or in a ponytail, and female students should wear a sports support top and undershirt. All piercings should be removed prior to training or competition. Keep in mind that judo is a contact sport, so all students are required to keep their finger and toenails neatly trimmed and clean, bathe at home directly after training or competition, and wash/dry and fold their judo gi's weekly.
